Miracle Gro Drop & Rotary Lawn Spreader Settings

A Miracle-Gro (formerly Scotts & Evergreen) lawn spreader is a fantastic way to ensure correct application when it comes to re-seeding an existing patch of grass, spreading grass seed for a brand-new lawn, or even applying a lawn feed, weed & moss killer to bring your lawn back to its former glory!

We here at Longacres have two different types of Miracle-Gro lawn spreaders; we have the drop spreader which releases your lawn seed or lawn feed underneath your spreader as you walk, and we also have the rotary spreader which is ideal for larger areas due to the rotating wheel which disperses the lawn feed or lawn seed in an arc shape in front of you.

Finding the right spreader and the right setting for your garden is important to ensure that you don’t overseed the area or scorch your lawn with garden chemicals. You will find the suggested setting both on this page and on the bag of product you are using. Be sure to either turn the dial or pull the leaver/gauge on your spreader depending on the model you are using.

How do I find the correct setting for my Miracle Gro lawn spreader?

Once you know which product you are going to be using, and whether you are going to be using the Miracle-Gro rotary or a drop lawn spreader, take a look at the side of the bag, or on the handy chart below, and adjust the settings using the dial, lever or gauge.

How many passes should I take when using my Miracle Gro lawn spreader?

The garden chemical or grass seed you are using should have an indicator of how many passes over your lawn you should do. However you can also find out in our hand chart below. If multiple passes are required on your lawn then be sure to always do the second pass at a right angle to help ensure even coverage of your lawn.

How fast should I walk whilst using my Miracle Gro lawn spreader?

The ideal speed to walk whilst operating a both the drop and rotary spreader is one meter per second. Don’t forget that you can walk with the spreader empty until you are happy you have the speed correct. Placing two markers at a distance of 10 metres apart and timing yourself to walk that distance in 10 seconds is a great way to ensure you’re ready before you start spreading.

How to I get an even application with my Miracle Gro lawn spreader?

With both the rotary and drop lawn spreader, you are best to apply product around the perimeter of the area, before walking up and down the lawn in a tramline formation.

What are the benefits of using the Miracle Gro Drop Spreader on my lawn?

The drop spreader is more suited to medium sized lawns. The roughly 45cm wide hopper releases lawn seed and lawn feeds directly underneath itself as you walk. This helps to ensure that you are only getting lawn seed or lawn feed exactly where you want it to go. The drop rate setting can be easily adjusted by turning the gauge located on the handle bar. Once you have adjusted the settings and filled the hoper, simply start walking and pull the trigger to open the holes to dispense.

What are the benefits of using the Miracle Gro Rotary Spreader on my lawn?

The rotary spreader is ideal for those looking to cover a larger area in less time. The rotary disc spins as you walks and sends your seed or feed out in a 3m wide arch in front of you. The drop rate setting can be easily adjusted by turning the gauge located on the handle bar. Once you have adjusted the settings and filled the hoper, simply start walking and pull the trigger to open the holes to dispense.

What is the best lawn spreader if I have a smaller lawn?

For the smaller lawns we do also have the Miracle Gro Multi Use Spreader. A hand held device with three settings depending on the product you are using. You can simply turn the yellow disc on the front of the spreader to begin applying.
