How To Make A Christmas Wreath For Your Front Door
Looking for some festive fun this year? Why not have a go at making your own Christmas front door wreath! You can find everything you need in store with some items also available online!
To make this wreath you will need:
- Straw wreath
- Floristry Wire
- Pliers
- Spruce
- Skimmia
- Eucalyptus
- Pinecones
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Ribbon
- Orange Slices
- Limes
Step One:
Attach Wire to Wreath:
This requires you to attach the first bit of wire to the wreath and then take the wire bundle around through the inside of the wreath a few times, making sure that it’s kept tight the whole way around.
Step Two:
Collect and Cut Foliage:
Collect a selection of different foliage. You may like to use spruce, different types of eucalyptus and a flower like Skimmia to add some colour.
Lay Out Foliage:
Take your first selection of sprigs and lay them down on the wreath. Remember, you will want to cover all the straw.
Secure Foliage:
Secure your foliage in place by wrapping the wire tightly around their stems. Don't cut the wire, simply keep wrapping it round as you go. Finish the wrapping by making one big loop and then pull the wire through the middle to tighten. Keep building and overlapping the foliage as you go round, keeping the same direction.
Step Three:
Make a Hook:
Choose which will be the top and which will be the bottom end of the wreath and then make your hook. Make the hook by pushing the wire through to the back of the straw, then bring the loop up and twist it around.
Step Four:
Prepare your decorations:
Orange Slices: Group a couple of orange slices together and push the wire through and then wrap both ends around each other.
Cinnamon Sticks: Create small bundles of 3 cinnamon sticks and tie them together with your wire. Leave a long wire tail for securing.
Pinecones: Lay the cones down and simply wrap your wires around them, then twist to make a stem.
Limes: These can be a bit more difficult - push the wire through the fleshy part of the lime, then bring the two wires round and twist together.
Bow: Take your ribbon and tie it into a bow - you may also want a tail for the bottom of your wreath.
Step Five:
Secure the Decorations:
To secure the decorations, push the wire stems through the straw wreath to the back, twist tightly in place and push the wire back into the wreath. You will want to space your decorations out evenly the cover the entirety of the wreath.
Finishing Touches:
To finish off, you will want to feel across the back of your wreath to check that there are no wires poking through. If there are, make sure you push them back through your wreath, as if they are left out, they will scratch your door.
Other things you may want to add to your wreath that haven’t been mentioned above are baubles, battery operated lights, or tinsel.
