How To Build A Raised Bed From Sleepers
This year, why not have a go at growing your own?
Raised beds are the ultimate choice for growing your own! They provide better drainage whilst also saving your back from bending, and ultimately allow you to control the soil quality.
While we do offer a great range of prebuilt raised beds, making your own from sleepers is a great way to add a bespoke look to your outdoor space and get hands on in the garden from the very start.
To make your raised bed, you will need:
- Sleepers
- Timber Screws (Hex Head are the best)
- Landscape Fabric
- Topsoil & Compost
Step one: Layout and Level
Clear the desired area for the bed by removing weeds and grass, then determine whether the area is flat with your spirit level.
This is an important step to ensure that all corners of your sleepers meet properly.
Step Two: Fix Together
Begin this step by placing your sleepers on the prepared ground in a rectangular shape. Then, you will want to join the corners of your sleepers together using two heavy duty timber screws (at least 50mm longer than the depth of your sleeper) for each join.
Step Three: Line and Fill
Finally, you will want to line the inside walls with landscape fabric to protect the wood. You can then fill your new raised bed with a mix of topsoil and compost.
You are now ready to get planting!
